Breakfast 101

I am still amazed that some people do not eat breakfast. It is such an important habit of healthy living, and essential in your ability to control weight. Usually my breakfast is by far the biggest meal of my day and holds me over for hours. Having a big breakfast sets your metabolism for the day. Think of your metabolism as a fire, not a perfect analogy but something well understood. When you wake up (from camping) the first thing you do is place wood on the fire.

Fire=metabolism

Wood is your breakfast. The more wood the bigger the fire, the higher your metabolism. In order for that fire to start quickly you use some brush and twigs and dead leaves. This is analogous to simple sugars, like fruits, sugary cereals, breads, pastas, etc. The fire will erupt into flames and then die 30 min later. You will experience alertness and then crash, fatigue. While breakfast is one of the times in the day where simple sugars and carbs are tolerated better, you need the big heavy logs to sustain that fire, and keep your metabolism burning for hours. Fat, protein and fiber are those big logs! For instance, instead of juice have the whole orange to get the fiber. Also, instead of juices or sugary caffeine loaded coffee, try to replace them with an energizing tea and honey. You get the caffeine and energy without all the added sugars. Eggs, cottage cheese, protein powder, beans, milks are excellent sources of protein in the morning. Nuts, oils, seeds, and real butter are good sources for fats.

Sample Breakfast

  • 4 omega 3 eggs (1 no yolk)Now thats a real breakfast!
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup cut spinach
  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1 cup rice milk
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 4 sliced strawberries
  • 4 spoonfuls applesauce
  • 1 cup green tea with honey
  • 1 fish oil supplement

I weigh over 2oo lbs so your breakfast will probably not be as big, but hopefully you get my point. What works for me may not work for you, so play around with some foods you think will work. I am just giving you ideas and a sample, its not set in stone for you to copy.
